Savoring Simple Crafts: My DIY Dollar Tree Two-Tier Mini Stand

There is a distinct, quiet joy that comes from looking at a handful of basic, inexpensive items and visualizing exactly what they could become with just a little bit of glue and paint.

Lately, I’ve been focusing on finding beauty and functionality in the unexpected, leaning into my love for simple, rewarding afternoon projects. Yesterday, while sorting through my crafting supplies, I decided it was the perfect time to clear out some stash items and tackle a quick DIY. I wanted to create a clean, versatile little riser—something perfectly sized to elevate a small houseplant, gather a few favorite seasonal accent pieces, or keep daily essentials neatly displayed.

The inspiration struck when I looked at a pair of simple wooden cutting boards I had picked up from Dollar Tree a while back. With their beautifully rounded corners and smooth surfaces, they were practically begging to be transformed into a stylish, double-decker display stand.

The Magic of Everyday Supplies

The absolute best part of this project? It cost next to nothing and didn’t require a single trip to the store. I dug into my existing stash of craft supplies to find the perfect building blocks and finishes. By pairing those affordable wooden cutting boards with a few square wooden blocks, a bottle of strong wood glue, and a partial jar of leftover paint, a beautiful piece of custom home decor began to take shape right on my table.

What I Used:

  • 2 Dollar Tree Wooden Cutting Boards: The perfect foundation with clean, rounded edges.
  • 1-inch Wooden Craft Blocks: Used as sturdy little risers and feet to separate and elevate the tiers.
  • Wood Glue or Strong Adhesive: To hold everything securely together.
  • Leftover Paint & Brush: I chose a gorgeous, soft sage-green hue that feels calm, earthy, and perfectly timeless.

Bringing the Stand Together

The assembly process was incredibly straightforward, which is exactly my kind of crafting! First, I planned out the spacing for the tiers. I attached four of the one-inch wooden blocks to the underside of the bottom cutting board to act as small, steady feet. Then, to create that wonderful double-decker look, I placed four more blocks near the corners of the bottom board and secured the second cutting board right on top of them.

Once the adhesive had fully cured and the structure was completely sturdy, it was time for the fun part: paint.

I opted for a beautiful, muted sage green that I had left over from a previous project. It’s a wonderfully calming, desaturated tone that lets the clean lines of the stand shine while blending effortlessly with the greenery of my houseplants and the warm wood tones of my home. Using soft, even brushstrokes, I coated the entire piece, letting the subtle texture of the wood grain peek through just enough to give it a lovely, handmade charm.

The result is a clean, minimal, and wonderfully functional two-tier riser that looks like it came straight from a boutique shop rather than the discount aisle!

Endless Ways to Style

Now that it’s finished, I keep moving it around because it looks beautiful absolutely everywhere! The compact, two-tier design makes it incredibly versatile for styling around the home. Here are just a few ways you could use a mini stand like this in your own space:

  • A Plant Lover’s Perch: It is the ultimate way to display small indoor plants. You can place a cascading Pothos or a delicate Philodendron on the top tier, allowing the vines to drape elegantly over the rounded edges, while leaving the bottom shelf open for a small dish or a second tiny succulent.
  • A Cozy Beverage Station: Situate it next to your coffee maker or multi-cooker station to neatly hold a jar of sugar cubes, a small honey pot, or a handful of favorite tea spoons.
  • Seasonal Vignettes: Use it as a rotating seasonal display base. It’s the perfect size to hold a small scented candle, a tiny decorative ceramic piece, or a little bundle of dried flowers.

  1. Paula, you did an awesome job creating this. I love those Dollar Tree cutting boards; so many possibilities when using them. I love how this turned out and how you displayed your plants on them. Love it! Thank you for sharing with us at the link party.

  2. A clever idea. When I first glanced at your stand, I thought of an office desk. The spaces under and between the shelves, would be great places for envelopes or scratch paper for notes. You’ve got my mind going!
Have a fun week. And blessings too!
