There is something so special about the arrival of mid-summer. The days are long, the morning air is perfect for enjoying a quiet cup of coffee, and everything is in full, glorious bloom. Lately, I’ve been spending a lot of time admiring my little green corners, both outside and inside, and reflecting on how much joy can be packed into a small space.
If you’ve been following along, you know I love finding ways to surround myself with nature, even if my “garden” doesn’t look like a sprawling backyard. Today, I wanted to give you a little tour of my current plant setup and share a few confessions along the way!
Making a Splash in a 3×5 Foot Space🌻🌷🪻
Let’s start right outside my front door. In front of my apartment, I have a very modest garden area—only about 3 feet by 5 feet. To make matters a bit more challenging, the ground here is packed with heavy clay and is super hard to dig or plant anything directly into the earth.
But where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Because I can’t easily plant in the ground, my trusty multi-pronged shepherd’s hook has come in incredibly handy. It allows me to garden vertically and add a massive pop of color right at eye level.
This year, the hook is working overtime! On one side, I have a basket overflowing with vibrant purple, pink, and white petunias that absolutely love the sunshine. On another side sits a stunningly dramatic coleus basket, showing off its gorgeous lime-green and deep burgundy leaves. Right in the center is a cheerful, trailing basket of pinks and white impatiens.

Down at the very base of the hook, sitting happily on the ground, is a beautiful container-made- easy multi-pot planter filled to the brim with red and white wax begonias and a tall, elegant green spike cutting through the center. It turns a tiny, hard-to-dig square of earth into an instant, welcoming oasis.

Oops… I Did It Again!🌞🪴
Now, let’s step inside, because my plant appreciation doesn’t stop at the front door.
Deep breath. Okay, it’s time for a confession.
I bought more houseplants. 😉🙃
I just couldn’t resist! My latest targets—er, additions—include a beautiful new Philodendron with striking, deep reddish-burgundy stems and broad, glossy green leaves. Along with it came an absolute showstopper of a variegated Spider Plant. It is so incredibly lush and happy that it’s practically bursting out of its pot, sending out long, bright yellow flower stalks and dozens of tiny “spidette” plantlets.

It is official: I have officially run out of usable space to put any more houseplants. Every end table, corner stand, and even my kitchen table is officially occupied. Okay, so I have a houseplant buying problem. I admit it! But walking into a room filled with clean, fresh greenery makes a small apartment feel so cozy and alive.
The Beauty of Small-Space Living
If you are also living in a smaller space, an apartment, or dealing with less-than-ideal soil, don’t let it discourage your green thumb. Small-space living forces us to be creative, to garden vertically, and to cherish every single leaf and bloom.
We don’t need acres of land to experience the peace of watching something grow. Sometimes, all it takes is a reliable shepherd’s hook, a favorite sunny corner, and a couple of beautiful new plants to remind us to slow down and savor the view.

I don’t have a green thumb at all, and generally rely on my husband (who DOES have a green thumb) to keep plants alive, but I love having plants! We’ve just moved to a small house an we don’t have a lot of workable space at the front door for plants, but we’re working on a solution similar to yours. I love your shepherds hook – what a wonderful way to maximize the number of plants you can have in a challenging space! And makes watering and tending a bit easier by cutting out the need to bend or kneel!
