Fun Facts About Strawberries
- Not a True Berry! Despite their name, strawberries aren’t botanically considered true berries (like blueberries or cranberries). They’re actually classified as an “aggregate accessory fruit” because the fleshy part we eat comes from the plant’s receptacle, not the ovary, and the “seeds” on the outside are the actual fruits!
- Seeds on the Outside: Strawberries are the only fruit with their seeds on the outside. Each average strawberry boasts about 200 of these tiny “achenes” (which are the real fruits!).
- Part of the Rose Family: Believe it or not, strawberries are members of the Rosaceae (rose) family, which also includes apples, peaches, and almonds!
- Vitamin C Powerhouse: Eight medium strawberries contain more Vitamin C than an orange, providing over 100% of your recommended daily allowance!
- Don’t Ripen After Picking: Unlike some fruits, strawberries do not continue to ripen once they’ve been picked. That’s why they’re harvested when they’re already bright red and ready to eat.
- Ancient Remedies: The ancient Romans believed strawberries could alleviate various ailments, from melancholy to kidney stones.
- First to Ripen: Strawberries are often the first fruit to ripen in the spring, signaling the official start of warmer weather and fresh produce.
- Global Popularity: Strawberries are grown in every single U.S. state and Canadian province, and they’re one of the most widely consumed fruits globally.
- More Than Just Red: While red is the most common, there are also yellow, white, and even purple varieties of strawberries!
- They’ve Been to Space! Strawberries have been on NASA missions, even landing on the moon with Apollo 11 in 1969. Scientists hope their familiar smell can provide a sense of home for astronauts.
- A Phobia Exists: There’s actually a fear of strawberries called “Fragariaphobia” (derived from Fragaria, the strawberry genus).
From their fascinating history to their surprising botanical classification, strawberries are truly incredible, and I had a blast weaving them into my summer-tiered tray decor. I hope this post has sparked some inspiration for your own seasonal styling or simply given you a new appreciation for this vibrant fruit. Don’t be shy – get creative with your own tiered trays this summer, and remember to savor every sweet moment! What theme are you dreaming up for your next display?
