12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
I’ve got a “tail” to tell, and it’s all about my wonderfully zany, wonderfully spoiled, and surprisingly dramatic beagle, Little Girl. Back in July, I had abdominal surgery to remove my Lap-Band (laparoscopic adjustable band), a device I had had for 17 years. While it helped me lose a significant amount of weight initially, I eventually gained a lot of it back as various chronic illnesses took over. In the process, my stomach and I had a falling out. It got so bad that food would often get stuck, forcing me to… ahem… “un-stick” it and “get rid” of it. For years, I couldn’t truly enjoy or savor a meal. Now, with the band gone, a whole new world of culinary delights has opened up. Hello, McDonald’s fries!
Recovery went smoothly, and I’m feeling wonderful, but this story isn’t about me. It’s about Little Girl, or “Little” for short, who’s almost 10 and an absolute diva.
On the morning of my surgery, I left at 5:30 a.m. with my best friend who drove me. The procedure was outpatient, and a few hours later, we were on our way home. When I checked my phone, I saw a voicemail from the State Police. What on earth? I thought. The message stated that an officer had been called to conduct a welfare check on me and asked me to answer my door. The following message was from my apartment’s housing office, informing me that since I hadn’t answered the door, the police had requested that a maintenance man let them in.
A maintenance man. The state police. My apartment. I wasn’t there. What could have led to this?
Apparently, my little drama queen was not happy that I had left. Since she’s a beagle, she wasn’t just barking—she was braying her head off. My car was in the parking lot, so anyone walking by could hear her fitfully expressing her displeasure. A kind neighbor got concerned and rang my doorbell, but of course, there was no answer. A few neighbors became worried (since my car was there) that something had happened to me and called for a welfare check.
At first, I felt a little annoyed and agitated, but that feeling was fleeting and quickly disappeared. I was instead so warmed by my neighbors’ thoughtful kindness and concern. I called the State Police back and let them know I was fine, explaining I had been at the hospital for outpatient surgery.
Before this, I had no idea Little howled when I left without her. She’s a certified mommy’s girl, and I love her to pieces. My next-door neighbor had even asked me a few times if she ever barked because he’d never heard her. Now, when I go somewhere without her, I’ve started putting notes on my door. What do you think of these?

The experience was a great reminder of the mighty kindness that exists in the world. It’s comforting to know that I have such caring and thoughtful neighbors looking out for me and my silly, howling dog.

It is wonderful to know there are others looking out for you, and for your drama queen :)
Oh my word that is too funny, but well done on the neighbours for checking in on you, especially as the dog hasn’t done this before #thanks for linking with #pocolo
Oh my, such a story. I hope the notes help.
It keeps telling me a duplicate comment has been left. What a story, hope the notes help
Oh wow! How alarming, inconvenient on surgery day, and ultimately kind, and hilarious. Your notes are so funny.
Love your notes on the door. Classic
