The search for the perfect sausage gravy recipe can feel a little like searching for a unicorn. With so many options out there, all claiming to be the “best,” it can be hard to know where to start. But I’m here to tell you that the search is over— at least for me it was.
This recipe isn’t some well-guarded family secret passed down through generations. Instead, it comes from a source I trust implicitly: passed down from my best friend Kim (my cooking cheerleader), who encourages my… ahem— cooking adventures. For years, she’s been the queen of quick, delicious, and easy breakfasts, and this sausage gravy is her masterpiece. It’s the one I turn to every time, and it’s so foolproof that even I, a self-proclaimed kitchen disaster, can make it perfectly. It’s quick and easy, which is why I wanted to share it with you.

Prep time: 20 minutes -
Cook time: 35 minutes -
Total time: 55 minutes
Ingredients
One – 16 oz sausage roll (any flavor i.e. original, maple, hot or sage)
One – 12 oz can of evaporated canned milk (or 12 oz milk)
1-2 | Cups water |
1/2 | Cup flour |
Salt & Pepper to taste |
Utensils
- Dutch oven or soup pot
- spatula & wooden spoon
- Measuring cups
Steps of preparation
- Begin by frying sausage in the Dutch oven until pink is gone. Then drain if needed.
- Next add the flour and combine well.
- Then stir in the milk combining well. Add one cup of water and combine. (reserve another cup of water incase you want to thin the gravy more).
- Bring to boil over medium heat. Then reduce and simmer on low for about 30 minutes. Gravy will thicken as it simmers.
- Serve hot & ENJOY!
Notes
— This gravy thickens while simmering then further as it sits. (you may need to add extra water or milk to thin).
— This reheats well in both the microwave and stovetop.
— Store in an airtight container for up to 5-6 days.
— I probably would not recommend freezing.
